February's Green Tip Of The Month

Recommending this tip to your sellers will also help in the marketing of their home and attract potential buyers.

Going Healthy Sells

There are many people with allergies, asthma, chemical sensitivities and so on who consider top indoor air quality a necessity.  In addition, more and more people are interested in cutting down on their exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC's).  So putting on a fresh coat of the new and now widely available "low-VOC" paints is a great idea.  Sellers this will also help in marketing your home and  attract potential buyers.

Thanks for the idea. We recently repainted our house with low VOC paint, but I had not thought of that as a green marketing tool.

I have help two customers recently who had asthma and this was a very important feature to them.  This is what made me think to use the low VOC as a marketing tool.

I take it they dont' sell these paints at...say Home Depot or Lowes...:).... I have been hearing about low voc paint....

Does this paint cover all VOCs from underlying paint?  And can these paints be found in any Home Depot or similar store?

Konnie - Yes they are selling the low VOC paint at Home Depot, I have not checked Lowes but if Home Depot is selling it so is Lowes.  I know also that Benjamin Moore also has low VOC paint as well.

Renae - That is a great question.  I have not read the instructions on the low VOC paint cans but I am assuming that you do not need to remove old paint before applying the low VOC paint.  If you go to Treehugger.com you can find out a lot of information on low VOC paint.

Kathy - No problem.  I think it is a great and easy way to start to "green up" your home.

Kari,

What a cool idea.  Do you have the green designation?

Ann - Thanks!  No I do not have a green designation but it is a goal of mine to acquire that designation by the end of the year.  I am currently Vice Chair of the Green Committee of the Venice Area Board of Realtors.

This a great advice.  Taking it one step further I advise owners to promote all of the high quality improvements and repairs in the home.  The paint is an excellent example since you can't tell the difference by just looking at it, but the owner choice for high quality is a benefit that can be passed on to the next owner.  I like the Sears example, they show the consumer good, better, and best choices.  Sometimes its difficult to see the difference between the choices.  Keeping a home maintenance log showing that you consistently made the 'best' choice goes a long way towards evaluating the condition of the home.

Kari,

I like the idea of going green and helping the environment...

Jim - I really like your advice about keeping a home maintenance log.  I will be sure to pass that on to my customers.  Thanks.

Ann - I love the idea of going green and helping the environment.  I am finding out that it is just little choices that we make, when you add them up can make big differences for the environment and our community.

Low VOC paint is going mainstream because, like so many green things, it just makes sense.  Great post.

Kari,

I think green tips such as this is a great idea.  Thanks for the information...I didn't even know they made low VOC paint...that is great!

Brenda - Thanks.  I was only recently made aware of the low VOC paint and am glad to know that it is starting to be widely used.  Every little thing we do makes a difference.

Lori - Glad to know that I was able help spread the word about low VOC paint.  I think it is a great idea also.
